HIPPY Graduation 

The Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) Program celebrated

the completion of their 9^th intake with a graduation on June 09 2018.  In total, 31

children graduated from the program, with over 250 people in attendance at the John

Dutton Theatre of the Calgary Public Library. HIPPY mothers and their children were

presented with certificates for their efforts and commitment to the program. The HIPPY

children are on their way to a successful school year, and their parents now have the

tools to continue to support them in their education. Congratulations HIPPY graduates! 

CIWA AGM  

CIWA’s AGM was held on June 19 2018, with over 140 people in attendance at the

Regency Palace Restaurant. CIWA would like to thank our clients, Megha Kohli,

Fleurine Akam and Kaila Andino for sharing their stories. The AGM was a great

opportunity to feature highlights from our Board of Directors, community and business

partners, staff, volunteers and clients. Thank you to everyone who supported us.

Gerda R. Bloemraad Educational Scholarship recipients

Christine Jade Salas and Jing Hua (Jen) Guo were the recipients of Gerda R.

Bloemraad Educational Scholarship at CIWA's AGM. Gerda R. Bloemraad Educational

Scholarship aims to provide monetary assistance to CIWA clients or volunteers, who

wish to further their education or commence a course at an accredited institution in a

subject of their choice. 

   Jing Hua (Jen) Guo is aspiring to become a doctor upon graduation from the

International Baccalaureate Program at Western Canada High School.  She

will commence her studies in September 2018 in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the

University of Calgary.  Originally from China, Jen is the Co-Founder and President of

Learn-Teract, a non-profit organization providing equal access to fair and quality

education for all youth in Calgary. Jen has been volunteering her time for the past four

years to support youth programming at CIWA through mentorship.  

   Christine Jade Salas is currently completing her last year of high school at James

Fowler. Originally from the Philippines, Christine has been participating in CIWA

programs for the past two years, including the Youth Mentorship Program and

the Made to Measure: An Intergenerational Dress Story initiative.  Christine has been

accepted into Nursing and Child Studies at Mount Royal University to pursue her dream

of helping others and will start her studies this September.  Christine continues to be an

active volunteer at CIWA.   

CIWA is proud to announce one new project 

CIWA is pleased to announce a new project! Employment Security Alliance

for Vulnerable Immigrant Women is a project that plans to increase the economic

security of immigrant and refugee women who are fleeing domestic abuse. As well as

establishing an alliance of employers, immigrant serving agencies, women's

organizations,community agencies, and immigrant women dedicated to supporting the

economic security of immigrant women fleeing violence. This project is

funded by Status of Women Canada. 

Because Mothers Matter Award

CIWA was honoured to be invited to the Mothers Matter Centre’s annual “Because

Mothers Matter Award” night held at the Glencoe Club in Calgary on May 10, 2018. The

Honourable Lois E. Mitchell, CM, AOE, LLD, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta received

accolades as a prominent Canadian mother who has demonstrated commitment and

dedication to her community. Himani Goyal was also recognized at the event for her

success as a mother and as woman who is realizing her goals and aspirations as a

result of her participation in the HIPPY program. Himani serves as role model for other

women who are experiencing the challenges of new immigrants to Canada.
