Welcome to the Calgary Immigrant Women's Association's bi-monthly Grapevine Newsletter! CIWA's AGM Thank you to all who attended CIWA's Annual General Meeting. Our annual report is available here. At the event, a new Board of Directors of CIWA for 2014-2015 was announced.
Gerda R. Bloemraad Scholarship Fund Recipients Aiman Saeed and Hien Nguyen were the recipients of Gerda R. Bloemraad Scholarship Fund at CIWA's AGM on June 17th. Gerda R. Bloemraad Education Scholarship aims to provide monetary assistance to CIWA clients or volunteers, who wish to further their education or commence a course at an accredited institution in a subject of their choice. Hien just recently graduated from the Links to Success: Skills Enhancement and Internships for Young Immigrant Mothers program. Hien's educational goal is to also become a Chartered Professional Accountant and this scholarship will help her in achieving that.
Denim Week Denim Week 2014 at CIWA ran from May 12-23 raising $4,221 in support of the Cure Foundation. The week began with a kick off presentation on May 12 with one of our own telling her experience with breast cancer. The week also featured the successful “Think Pink Bake Sale”. Other activities running through the week included henna, threading, jeans week, and a pink raffle. Staff, volunteers, students and clients participated in the weeklong events.
MP Joan Crockatt announced continued funding by the Federal Government for Links to Success Program ![]() On May 23rd, MP Joan Crockatt visited CIWA and announced continued funding commitment to CIWA's Links to Success program by the Federal Government.
CIWA offers financial literacy courses to low income immigrant women in partnership with Alberta Network of Immigrant Women CIWA is partnering with Alberta Network of Immigrant Women in increasing the financial literacy of low income immigrant women who are over qualified yet underemployed. Together, CIWA and ANIW will deliver workshops and one-on-one consultations that increase client knowledge, skills and ability to understand, analyze and use information to make informed financial decisions. Training will also be provided to ensure participants have the skills to educate others. This initiative is funded by Prosper Canada - TD Financial Literacy Grant Fund. |
